Direct control of processes via the Web

Siemens Automation and Drives (A&D) has improved the performance of its Simatic PCS 7 process control system, Version 6.1, and added new functions to it. Using a Web functionality for the operator stations, processes can now be controlled, operated and monitored directly via Internet/intranet. The new Gigabit-Ethernet communication is particularly suitable for large plants with extensive signal quantities and wide communications networks. Data required for a longer period can be saved in a central archive server. For plant maintenance, the Simatic PCS 7 Asset Management option can be integrated in the PCS 7 process control system and is executed there parallel to the plant automation. The compilation and loading times have also been significantly reduced in Version 6.1. Users can now modify configurations much faster than previously.

Using the Web functionality for the operator stations (OS), processes can be controlled, operated and monitored directly via Internet/intranet. From the PCS 7 Web client – any PC with Internet Explorer – the user can access all process data via the PCS 7 Web server. The Internet-Explorer representation on the client PC corresponds to the HMI of a conventional operator station with overview, working and key areas. User-specific access privileges can be set for the PCS 7 Web client just like with an operator station. All Web client operations are automatically logged together with the name of the operator. Up to 50 Web clients can access one PCS 7 OS Web server. Remote operation is therefore also possible for complex applications.

The new Gigabit-Ethernet technology offers a high communications performance which is particularly required by large plants with extensive signal quantities and wide communications networks. With high availability requirements, the plant bus and the communications network for the operator stations are designed as a redundant optical ring.

Simple handling and management of archived data are possible using the central archive server for saving and management of measured values, messages, alarms, reports and Simatic batch data. Loss of data is avoided by saving on commercially available media such as DVDs.

Simatic PCS 7 Asset Management is used for predictive maintenance. Plant operators and maintenance engineers use the same Simatic PCS 7 tools and HMIs with information filtered and prepared for the respective task area. Additional hardware or software tools are unnecessary.
